Knowing your acronyms, such as DUCY (“Do You See Why?”) allow you to participate in the chat that accompanies the fast-paced environment that signifies any online poker table. Picking up on the most common acronyms lets you feel part of the game, part of the flow, and recognizing the acronyms in an instant means you’ll have that much more time to focus on your poker, instead of trying to noodle out what all those crazy letters mean.

Here’s a sampling of acronyms you’re likely to encounter at an online table. Some are borrowed from the traditional brick-and-mortar game, while others have evolved with the growth of poker’s online version:

AO – add-on

BBL – be back later

BRB – be right back

CB, C-bet – continuation bet

CF of C/F – check-fold, describing a betting sequence for a given player

CR or C/R – check-raise

DIAGF – an impolite acronym usually typed by an extremely tilted, juvenile player, usually after a bad beat. It means “Die in a grease fire.” Just consider the source, and go on with your play.

EP – early position

EV – expected value. +EV (positive expected value) is much better than –EV (negative expected value). Poker players search for +EV games and situations.

FR – full-ring games, 9- or 10-handed

FTOPS – Full Tilt Online Poker Series

FTP – Full Tilt Poker, a large online site

FWIW – For what it’s worth

GFY – even more rude than DIAGF, think about it

GG – good game

GL – good luck

HORSE – a tourney or cash-game format featuring five rotating games: Limit Texas Hold’em (“H”), Limit Omaha-8 (“O”), Razz (“R”), Seven-card stud (“S”), and Seven-card stud hi/lo, eight or better for lo (“E”)

HU – heads-up, referring to players or tables

HUD – heads-up display (referring to a software tool used by some dedicated players)

IDK – I don’t know

IMO – In my opinion (or its common variant IMHO – In my humble opinion)

IRL – in real life

LAG – loose-aggressive player (a/k/a “Gus Hansen”)

LDO – Like, duh, obviously

LHE – (fixed-) limit hold’em

LOL – laughing out loud

LP – late position

MTT – multi-table tournament

NH – nice hand

NLHE – No-limit (Texas) hold’em, the most popular online poker variant

OMG – Oh my God!!

OOP – out of position, usually an EP (early-position) player

O8 or O-8 – Omaha-8 (hi-lo, 8 or better), another popular game

PF – pre-flop

PFR – pre-flop raiser

PL – pot-limit

PLO – pot-limit Omaha

PS – PokerStars, the largest online poker site

PT – PokerTracker, a statistical player tracking program

PTR – Refers to Poker Table Ratings

PWN – online gamer lingo, means the same as “own”

RB – rebuy

ROFL – rolling on the floor, laughing; ROFLMAO adds “my ass off” at the end

SCOOP – Spring Championship of Online Poker (at PokerStars)

SH – short-handed, often referring to 6-player tables

SNG – Sit-n-go, usually but not necessarily a single-table tournament (STG)

SS – Refers to SharkScope, another online player-rating site

STG – single-table tournament

TAG – tight-aggressive player

TBH – to be honest

TID – take it down

TPTK – Top pair, top kicker

TYVM – thank you very much

UTG – Under the gun

WCOOP – World Championship of Online Poker (at PokerStars)
